A Watchlords Exclusive Preview...AMCHPR in Beijing

Postby AlbertaTime » May 6th 2018, 10:15am

This forum supports me in ways no other forum ever has, and although I'm leaving most watch stuff for later when I can do better write-ups, and will post more on this day on a couple of forums as well as Facebook at a later date, this isn't even on Facebook (at least not by me, and certainly not in this detail).

THIS IS FOR THE 'LORDS

Sunday, May 6th/2018, China time, starting at about 11:00AM.

Cast of characters (besides lucky me)

David Chang (shown here, with his wife, taken today):

Image

David is the owner of and primary writer for Watchina, a Chinese news and media company that produces videos and news articles on high-end horology for the Chinese market. He's a widely recognized figure in horology circles around the world, a respected horological writer and, for a number of years now, he's been a Jury Member for the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève. He is also the Director of the Beijing Collectors' Association.

Shen Ming:

Image

Mr. Shen is Editor and photographer for China's now-very-glossy "Beijing Collector" magazine, and a prominent and long-time member of the Beijing Collector's Association, specializing in Chinese cameras and watches, and...

Liu Dong.

Image

Mr. Liu is the master engraver responsible for the engraving of Beijing Watch Factory's incredible Dragon Plays With Phoenix wristwatch, which you might recall from these photos, built under the technical direction of BWAF's movement designer Master Xu Yaonan.

We all met at the Xiong Enamel Museum of Art, which is the formal installation for display of enamel Master Xiong Songtao and his father's enamel masterpieces, including work created for, among others, Piaget, Cartier and Patek. The museum is in the just-outside-Beijing artist colony at Songzhuang (read about Songzhuang here).

Image

Image

That was followed by a great lunch at Mina's Restaurant (nearby, and also in Songzhuang).

Image

Image

After lunch, Mr. Liu, and then Mr. Shen and David, presented me with signed copies of magazines.

First, engraver Mr. Liu signed a 2008 issue of Beijing Collector that focused on the Dragon Plays With Phoenix...

Image

Image

...then David and Mr. Shen autographed a rare and early (2005) issue that focused on vintage Chinese watches and vintage Chinese cameras.

Image

The magazines will make great displays at the AMCHPR.

Now...I did say this was a preview, and I have *lots* more (including watch-related) material from this shoot, but I did get a wrist-shot from Mr. Chang, Mr. Shen and Mr. Liu (my wrist ain't there...):

And "preview" means "more to come..."

Stunning engraving, a really really big vase and another cool post from China.

I like it when you go to China ,not as much as you do, but the stuff you send back is always a great view/read.

Why, he's no fun, he fell right over.

Wow! Quite the cast of players you hang out with A-T.

That engraving, what amazing work and on such a diminutive scale. He must possess vision and patience on a 1:100,000,000 level. I cannot imagine there are more than a few hundred living humans capable of such work?

Let me join the chorus: Reading the thread, you really get a sense of what everything is like there.

Well done.

Yet another of the fine postings of the gentleman/scholar of the Eastern watch scene. As far as I know, there's nobody else from this hemisphere who is more learned, more capable than A-T in his reportage of the Chinese horology universe!
I checked you out, and I now want you to take the journey to lick my taint. It's small, but vast.

Very kind comments from you all.

But you're all the reason Watchlords is so special.

Thanks, Alain--and everyone. I am having a great time, and the month is just about over. I'll start posting the sequential play by play soon after I get back and settled. here's one fun stat: I've taken well over 6000 photos on the trip. Now, many of them suck and many are close-to-duplicates, but there are some good ones, so it's gonna be fun sorting out all the photos, news and anecdotes :-)

More to come...

The most important question of all in my opinion, did you buy a watch?
