Suggest Me a Rolex

Suggest Me a Rolex

Postby tiktok » April 12th 2019, 9:28pm

I've decided to make the plunge with GS pricing going North Pole. I want to pay under $7k and, I asked Smells and he steered me to stuff over budget. I'm a skinny old hipster, love 39mm and don't do well with bezels, too much reaching under my steel work bench is my latest theory, so what should I get?

My favorites are AK, Milgauss and Datejust.

The Exploder Deux scratched my itch. You'll have to go used to get one under seven grand, though.

Yeah, either of the 2 Explorers(used) or a Sub(used) if you can afford it..while a fan of the DJ, I just don't think it is a practical wear working around a steel work bench..good luck!!..

I'd lean toward a Datejust. It's the closest real equivalent to much of what GS sells. They are priced roughly around a similar GS. Or at least they were until recently.

GS seems intent on making the Datejust a "value proposition" which is something I dreaded but did not predict.
And the fact I'm still living rent free in his head makes me grin and giggle.

Oyster Perp 39mm. Still mostly available at list prices from dealers, as they haven't started using them to fuck buyers in the ass by shifting them out the back door to the grey for a tasty kickback.

They have in London, but that's a given, considering all the filthy money that's sloshing around there...

Vintage Oyster / Oyster Date ('40's, 50's, 60's) on Croc-o-gator of some kind- Rolex makes some nice ones for the old stuff- hell you might even get 18K for your price range, not on a bracelet, but they are really classy, understated pieces and not hard to find c/ worn mvmt parts R and R'ed, cleaned, lubed and adjusted. Available with or without wabi sabi.

Last Friday mate, I contacted the local AD's and one of them had it in stock. He put it aside for me and I popped in and bought it. One of the most pleasurable shopping experiences of my life.

Someone, somewhere theorized about the WIS process, starting out with Rolex and coming back to them at the end of the cycle.I have come full circle. Sold everything else, and I am really happy.

This is the only watch I have worn all the time without wanting to take it off. So yeah, I'm done :3

I agree with JAS1125 - an Explorer 1 would be a great choice. There's the current 214270 in 39mm, or you can look for one of the old 36mm models, 14270 and 114270. Still, below 7K, that might not be easy.

Of vintage, you can check out the Datejust 1600 (smooth bezel), 1601 (fluted bezel) or 1603 (engine-turned bezel). I believe that at US-based dealers, you can even find a Day-Date ref.1803, only on a strap instead of a bracelet.

Oh, and should you go vintage, stay away from models with a blue dial. For whatever reason, the tritium lume really liked to react with the paint, thus leaving heavy tarnish around the plots. That said, an original blue dial will have substantial marks around the lume plots. A "mint" piece, as the newspeak has it, without any damage to the paint around the plots, is more than likely to be a redial or a service dial.

If you decide to go vintage and need any help, just say the word.

Whatever is lost through a sober rewster I pledge to make up with a drunken Hawk.

Provided I'm awake, not into the Ambien, and sew fourth.

But what is best in life? The confluence of a hammered rewster and a stewed hawk. Garnished with snark. By the way, anybody else getting hinky FB messages roughly equivalent to the Ambien intake?
