Ermey as an actor was certainly a "Johnny one note" - but that note was a dead-on bullseye. RIP indeed.

You've got that right. Ermey was so perfect for that role that at times the film looked like a documentary. Kubrick fucked things up a bit in the second act with his usual plodding pacing, but Ermey alone made that movie a must-see.
