George Daniels Lecture From 1990

Well worth taking a few minutes to read this article.

The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI) is the professional organization for watch and clock makers in the USA. Every year, the AWCI holds a national convention with classes and lectures focused on horological education. At the 1990 convention George Daniels delivered a fascinating lecture to the Institute, which was recorded but unfortunately relegated to storage shortly thereafter. Luckily for all of us today, the VHS tape was recently rediscovered and digitized. Daniels lectured on the development of his watches and escapement, touching on the difficulties he encountered while trying to commercialize his invention. The lecture is accompanied by animations of escapements, shown to demonstrate the improvements that the Daniels co-axial introduced. Hearing Daniels explain his motivations and challenges is absolutely fascinating, and well worth an hour of your time to watch. ... cture-1990

That was awesome! If you don't already admire Daniels, you will after you see the linked video. A capital addition to the Daniels videos on the board.

The prices Daniels' work is fetching is mind boggling. As the link after the article notes, the Space Traveller pocket watch recently sold for a whopping 4.3 million, nearly double the high estimate. The latest sale price is more than double the price it last sold for in 2012 (2.1 million), that sale having more than doubled the high estimate.

Easily the most important watchmaker since Breguet, collectively speaking, Daniels' creations have arguably become the most sought after watches in the world for the purely intrinsic value ascribed to them for the maker- Recognition he richly deserves.
