Hawk wrote:It's not about price, exclusivity, endorsements, snobbery or hate.

It's about unabashed mendacity, dancing on the edge of consumer fraud, misrepresentation, preying on the gullible, design rip-offs, morally inept and ethically bankrupt marketing.

It's about oily patches of the internet frequented by those desperate for confirmation bias and willing to put up with insults and derision from an overbearing and demeaning male dominatrix derivative with the only acceptable response being "yes sir! may I have another?" when uncomfortable topics such as Swiss factories or marketing bullshit are broached. It's about mental masturbation while staring at fever-dream induced MSRPs with digital reach-arounds. It's about failure to grasp elementary economic market concepts - hint: if you and 500 of your buddies paid 200.00 for a watch it is, at the very most, a 200.00 watch. It is not, never has been, and never will be a 1,500.00 watch sold for a hell of a bargain.

It's about bogus comparisons, made up words like "tritnite" or "krysterna", the slimy marketing behind things like "alligator embossed genuine leather" or "Swiss heritage".

It's about being, quite simply, overpriced. When Stuhrling or Invicta flirt with actual decent components their "once only" price generally exceeds that of real value brands such as Christopher Ward or Hamilton. Their MSRPs aren't worth the breath needed to utter them. The entire house of cards is built around selling a 29.00 watch for 300.00 while comparing the pos to a 3,000.00 product. No matter how little you paid for a TV watch, you were bent over the trestle value-wise.

The only saving grace associated with TV watches is that if you actually like garish, over-the-top wristwatches featuring Love Canal commemorative mother of pearl, bridge cables, canteen caps, chains, soda cans, fake sandstone, sparkly bits, an overdose of time knobs or generally just enjoy being pointed at or surreptitiously stared at then go for it - just know you overpaid.

By way of illustration, an impromptu grab out of the desk drawer and shitty cell phone pic follows - that guy on the right is a Fossil. I prefer that Fossil to 99.8 percent of all TV watches. It's an honest, decent looking product that manages to not be breathlessly pretentious and doesn't fuck over people in nursing homes. I'm more likely to post the one in the middle in a "WURW" thread but perhaps the Fossil needs a little more love - it does, after all, not make me self-conscious when I wear it quite unlike the average TV watch would - and it's considerably easier on the wallet.

Werd. I'm damn near misty eyed here after reading Hawk's post. Ought to be required reading for budding watchgeeks or freeks.

No question. Well done.
I bought a dive watch from them that literally had “dive” in the name. The instructions said not to dive with it - it was only meant to LOOK like a dive watch. It was also fast by more that a minute per day. Garbage. Never again. - Watch buyer on Reddit

till recently I wore only swiss, doing so since college. tag/Rolex/omega/chopard etc but these days I'm happier wearing my older watches HMT and Citizen custom V2. unfortunately my Seiko 5 was stolen many years ago and I'm still searching for an identical watch. I just made my first eBay watch purchase, a late 60s? oval bulova with a red dial, let's see how it turns out. I don't even feel like wearing my fancy watches any more. what is wrong with me?

I have about fifteen running watches. The most expensive would be a Citizen aviator, I paid $187 for it. Seiko monster $151, Lord Elgin probably worth about $100 as is. Even a Invicta 3044 Grand Diver, went against my grain. But for $105 I went for it, Seiko hacking movement too. I like it, but side by side with the Citizen or the Seiko. I can see it is not in the same league. Hopefully a Hamilton in the future, many of us do not have long money. We like watches, but live in our means. I came here to learn, which I did. Watch snob or hater, far from it. A learner and a watch appreciator is more like it.

I like watches...period. In this age of the smart phone, the death of print newspapers and magazines, and cars that plug into the wall, I want to help preserve the telling of time on a wrist. Does that make me a dinosaur? Maybe.

Oh, and get off my lawn.

I like affordable Swiss watches both 3 hand and chronos, Seiko divers, Citizen (especially those with unique dials), some G Shocks, and a few Timex models. If I could afford Rolex or Omega, I would collect them to.

I LOVE yard sales. I once bought a cherry 1958 Fender Stratocaster for $55 from some old guy whose kid used to play it ("But it's so old," I bargained).

It was a GARAGE sale, not a yard sale. (Inside joke here guys!) And I was strictly acoustic, not electric.

If the guy you bought it from was wearing a Members Only jacket and no pants, you ripped off Foghorn.

Do they have Walmarts in Canada? And if so, do the little smiley faces on all their signs wear berets?

Why do you prefer Japanese?

More often than not I prtefer the Japanese aesthetic. A lot fo the Swiss watches, especially the non-sports models, are a bit too ornamental for me, too heavily embellished, too many styling florishes, too traditional, for want of a better word. Not all of them, by any means, but a lot, especially in the range I can afford. Rolex offers a lot of more plainly styled and chunkier models, IWC too, but they are damned expensive.

Generally speaking, again in the price range I most often shop (under $1,000), I feel like you get more for your $$$ with the Japanese. Especially as I highly value manufacture watches, with the associated inhouse movements, heritage, and history of innovation.

A real snob would wear a solid gold patek , Lang or
Rolex with gleaming diamonds. Thats why theres no chance of me being a snob.
