Microbrands you consider mainstream or good

Postby koimaster » July 16th 2018, 2:43pm

We all diss a lot of microbrands here, many which have used crowd funding as source to raise funds to produce watches.

1. When does a microbrand move into either the status of a regular brand or an accepted microbrand defined as a watch company that has:

Made previous watches and delivered
Real Customer service
Real life warranty
Value for the price

2. Which micros do you think have made that transition?

I would consider Borealis, Marloe and Crepas as watches that meet those criteria.

Guess Dan Henry is the only one that I can think of as meeting the criteria.

Maybe also Balticus, G.Gerlach, Vratislavia Conceptum and OWC.

While there are a few micros out there that are run by standup guys (like OWC, Dan Henry and a few others) most of 'em are either Submariner homages or crappy "original" designs, overpriced, and generally with a Seiko automatic movement bunged into a Chinese catalogue case. Most of the original designs look like shit; the homages, well, you want a good homage, buy a Steinhart. They're actually really good watches for the price, and they're made by a real company, not a couple of hipsters named Taffy and Bryce.

Halios is the only micro I would vouch for. Are they mainstream yet? Maybe not.

Fred Amos is right. Years ago I mailed a watch to him for a new crystal and asked for a buff job on the rather scratched up case. Fred re-cased the watch for the price of a crystal and sent it back with a friendly note. Rockstar.

Very much concur.

Steinhart makes a nice watch as did CW, pre hipster logo.
