Mr. Bloke goes digital

Mr. Bloke goes digital

Postby MKTheVintageBloke » June 4th 2019, 8:30am

Yes, yes, I know, it's completely unlike me. Not only did I buy the third Asian watch in a row (yellow fever, or what?), now it's a digital one. For whatever reason, recently I've seen a shitload of these 1980s-style digital Casio. I suppose that people usually buy them for (aaarghhh!) "retro geek vibe", and because these things are fucking cheap.

So, what did I do? For the sake of the retro geek vibe and the fact that it costs close to fuck-all, I've bought one. The reference, for those who didn't stop reading after the last sentence, is A168. And here it is:
Image

If that didn't have you hammer some goodies from Cabrioles R Us up where the Sun doesn't shine, let me tell you this: I've "taken the plunge" on it at "the local AD."

The watch comes in a cardboard box. In fact, it comes packed no better than Lucky Strike reds, hence I'll skip the packaging.

The wartche is no longer of Japanese make, as most Casios no longer are. Not that Casios were ever the stuff to feature Seppuku enamel dials created by nude geishas in a remote studio on the top of Mt. Bukkake. The wartche is made in China, and the bracelet - in Cambodia, a country famous for jungles full of venomous fucking reptiles and bugs, psychopathic dictators slaughtering everyone wearing glasses, and peasants and water buffalos occasionally turning into pink mist on some forgotten minefield-turned-rice paddy.

Image
Cathay!

The case is more plasticky than the botoxed-up face of a spent 1980s pornstar, but for what it's worth, it doesn't feel badly made. The bracelet... Nothing fancy, but it's light, smooth, and the adjustment works just like on the mesh I've got on my Zenith. Here it is:
Image

The inscriptions on the...well, display, not dial, are the 1980s kind of cheesy. ElectroLuminescence... I bet that in the 1980s that would have been something.

As to what this 1980s-ish thing can do...

60-minute chrono:

Alarm:
Image

Time display in a 12h format - toggling between 12 and 24h is done by a longer press on the start/stop button.

Apart from that, there's the blue backlighting for the display.

Yeah. Nothing fancy. But you know what? I fucking like it. Mr. Bloke out.

The post works as both a review and poetry. Well done.

I'd buy you a pint if the Home Office didn't just deny my wife's visa. Today. About an hour ago. Puts London right with Seattle on the list of places I didn't visit but bought tickets for this year.

N.B. This last is not political - simply bureaucracy doing what bureaucracy does best. Oh, and fuck Virgin Atlantic.

The review brightened the day considerably. "Seppuku enamel dials [from] the top of Mt. Bukkake." Giggle - snort.
And the fact I'm still living rent free in his head makes me grin and giggle.

The classic Casio. A good looking and iconic watch worthy of being in anyone's collection.

I always had Timex Ironman watches, not really necessary except to no one when it was time to switch from bars to after - hours clubs.

Thanks, chaps. Glad you liked the review!

That's a cool solution. Although I see two problems with it. One - battery change would be a nightmare. Two - the mineral oil certainly compensates for the weakness of the plastic case, but it doesn't really improve the gaskets around the buttons, which I would assume to be the weakest spots.

Frankly, I wonder if it can actually withstand submersion.

Indeed. And there's pretty much always a reason for buying it. Costs little, that's one, but apart from that, if someone needs a 1980s watch made today, or just a good-looking beater, this one's pretty much the way to go.

Sorry to hear about the visa issue. Desk apes paid for with taxpayer's money presumably just needed to meet the quota of ruined holiday plans to get a bonus. Good to know that at least the write-up made a bad day better.

Amen.

Heard these things are pretty tough. Still, the one my father had, lasted only 3 years before it was off for a permanent holiday in Fiddler's Green. Gaskets gave up on a casual swim, and there, FUBAR. Then again, I used to have (well, I still do, in the depths of some drawer) a Timex Expedition - the amount of mistreatment that it survived made me think that we tend to seriously underrate chrome plated cases with a 50m WR rating.

Indeed. The humble Timex weekender makes posers of us all. Even at 30 m W/R

Heck of a job. After reading that, I might consider that Casio the best overall value in watchdom, surpassing my old choice, the Seiko 5 SNK series, which for some reason seems to have gone up like 30 bucks the past couple of years. What I like best about that Casio is that if you shop a little bit, you can grab one for like $12. I even saw that model on sale at the gift shop of MOMA in NYC.
I bought a dive watch from them that literally had “dive” in the name. The instructions said not to dive with it - it was only meant to LOOK like a dive watch. It was also fast by more that a minute per day. Garbage. Never again. - IWG buyer on Reddit
