Seiko H556-5029 my new, old watch

Seiko H556-5029 my new, old watch

Postby Kahuna74 » June 1st 2018, 3:36am

Well Lords it' has been a long time since I have posted about a new watch I've picked up, even though there has been a few. I have noticed my tast lately has been back to quartrz watches. I have either picked up or repair some Heuers with another custom one in coming. With that all said I have wanted one of these for a long time. So I found this one and jumped on it. The last one I found that had been cleaned up, I lost in the auction because I fell asleep. I wasn't letting this one get away. It is a Seiko Sports 100 H556-5029 "Pre Arnie or BabyArnie" watch as they are called by some, in good condition with a new mineral glass crystal, new crown and stem, new pusher gaskets, new Seiko rear case gasket, new silver oxide battery, new Seiko 1.5MM spring bars and the crown, pushers and case gasket have been treated with Seiko TSF-451 silicone grease. The watch is fully functional in good working order including the alarm, stopwatch, dual times and light. The bezel is bi-directional and it to has been cleaned and turns easily I'm being told. The watch is running strong and accurate the seller tells me and he has sold and repaired a few of these and has a good understanding of them. The serial number is 224678, which tells us the watch was most likely produced in February of 1982. That year is the most common it seems for this model.

Pictures are from the seller, so when it gets to me next week I'll take a wrist shot. Looking for a leather strap for this one and I have my eye on two at the moment. Thanks for looking and as always, I wear what I like and own what I wear.

Small world!!..in 1981, I owned the same Seiko Sports 100, but w/o the chrono function..it was not cheap at all at that time..brings back memories of Grafenwoehr & fresh German Gasthaus beer...

Thanks Thunder1, I wanted one, but could not afford one back then. Last few years I thought about that and have been on the hunt since.

So cool!

I got a Tissot Twotimer as a gift for my "confirmation", that was in 1983. These hybrid analog-digital watches were obviously the thing in the early 80ies.

Thank you gerson. Truthfuly I think they are still very common and well liked models, there are still a lot of companies making different versions of them, I know I have looked at a Tag, Breitling and a newer Tissot. I own a Citizen diver and they as well as Seiko still have newer versions as well. Maybe they are just for us old farts, but I think for this generation that seems unable to tell time, they might serve a higher purpose.

That's a neat model. Nice one to get your hands on.

Have always liked Casio's take on ana-digi but they are just too damned big. This Seiko looks considerably smaller than the Casio?

Freakin' great post, Kahuna. I have an old Seiko that's one of my true prized possessions, but yours is even 12 years older than mine. Looks great, and I'm glad you finally got a hold of that one. Too cool. It's like a time machine on your wrist, and it's true - in the day, those things were not cheap and we considered the big, new thing on the scene.
I would rather be seen wearing an Invicta than a Hublot - at least I can explain away the Invicta.

Love it, ana-digi are my favourite type of quartz as they show how versatile it is.

There are some older Casio ones that are about this size loaf, I've seem them on the bay. Also Adi makes some nice ones, I came close to picking one up, as they sell for about half what these one do. There are some others that have a Miyota movement in them that look very cool and about the same size.

Thank you and welcome aboard. I might add those are some great pictures you took of the watch and it looks even better on my wrist then in your pictures. I haven't taken it off since it got to me. I took it on a road trip up to Bennington VT. today and am having trouble taking my eyes off of it, not good while driving I might add.

Thank you fellow Lords, I seem to just be having fun with where my watch collection is going this year. I haven't broken the bank, yet have five new purchases.

I think what makes yours standout is the band. I've sold a couple that were as nice, case, bezel and crystal, but the original bracelet was worn and other than clean it there not much I can do with a 35 year old bracelet. It takes away from the watch, but a lot of people want it all original. I'm glad that you're happy with it but please keep your eyes on the road. ;)

You got that right. It's definitely possible to amass a worthy collection without going into any debt at all. Heck, that's half the fun of doin' it, right?

Glad you finally got hold of one. Eighty two was the year I graduated HS, ana-digi must have been the tits back then. It looks pretty good for its age and it actually is a little surprising that the LCD looks great over 35 years later. Congratulations.
