New watch, "sub homage" diver

New watch, "sub homage" diver

Postby PiningforElgin » February 13th 2018, 9:37pm

Hi y'all!

Just received in the mail the first watch I bought in 2018. I remember one time at this forum I mistakenly called a bunch of divers as sub homage and many members here were angry. looking back in spirit of good humour I call this my new sub homage

It's Sea-Gull's first legit diver, the Ocean Star. I got the blue version. It has ST2130 in it, which is a clone of ETA 2824. At 44mm it's a bit large, but it doesn't seem that big on the wrist (likely due to very aptly sized bezel). Since I don't have a lot of similar watches, I can't make a comparison between this one and others yet. Maybe one day if I have (or borrow from a buddy) a Seiko Tuna/Monster, a Borealis or Steinhart or Certina DS, or, the even a Sinola Lake Erie Monster I can write a head-to-head review about it.

Have looked at these several times. A tad too big for my current tastes.

I think it is a good watch for the price. How’s the LOOM?!

Like it. Chinese are real contenders in horology.

I'd like to see more Chinese manufacturers moving in that direction and the Sea-Gull Ocean Star variants look great. Ya did good.

Great you asked. I have something to say about the loom. Actually it's the only complaint about this one.

The loom on the markers and hands are excellent. The loom on the bezel pip however, is weak and almost nonexistent. The older Ocean Star had a round sub-style pip but the one I got is the later version with the triangular pip that's much thinner. This pip lume I can only notice it when it's total darkness. Even in a an evening dark bedroom the pip was barely noticeable (you have to really look for it).

Not sure if it's a common problem or if I just got a badly lumed pip. Didn't want to ship it back to China to get exchanged, I might just have the watchmaker nearby to relume it or replace the pip, the last time she did it for me it was fairly cheap
