White Gold Rolex Daytona Ref. 6265 'Unicorn' Sells For $5.9M

White Gold Rolex Daytona Ref. 6265 'Unicorn' Sells For $5.9M

Postby Racer-X » May 12th 2018, 1:32pm

Just moments ago, during the much-anticipated Daytona Ultimatum sale hosted by Phillips in Geneva, the unique white gold ref. 6265 Daytona sold for CHF 5,937,500. This is now the second most expensive Rolex ever sold publicly, after Paul Newman's own Paul Newman Daytona, which sold for $17.75 million last year at Phillips in New York. It takes a second-place position previously occupied by the Rolex reference 6062 "Bao Dai," which sold for $5,060,427 last year.

The watch itself is nice, however...
a) looks like the chrono seconds hand doesn't reset properly (to a hair short of the 12 o'clock marker)
b) the rhodium plated bracelet doesn't fit the non-plated white gold case colour-wise, and has a design that would fit a 1960s dress watch, but on a sports chrono looks slightly ghey
c) It's another overhyped vintage Daytona (with the Daytona possibly the most overhyped and overrated watch of all time)
d) I love the "unique piece" claims, they're soooo verifiable with a brand that doesn't give a fuck about vintage pieces and their owners, not even letting them access the records for a particular watch in the company's archives.

In an odd, bizarro world sort of way ,when it comes to succumbing to pure hype, there isn't a big difference between Rolex and Invicta fanbois. Or maybe any fanbois of any brand. But Rolex and Invicta seem to set the tone as far as fanboyism is concerned.

If I were a rich man, I'd put all my money in Vintage sports Rolex. And be happy.

Auctions are practically all dick size contests in the first place, be it cars, watches, or paintings.

It's all meaningless, who cares - except that it all artificially inflates prices on similar models which collectors might be interested in the future, and that's where the bullshit meter flies right off the dial. That's why wristwatch auctions are harmful to the hobby overall (even if it's a segment of the hobby that I'm not remotely a part of).
Proof that quartz is still not only viable, but sometimes, something to covet: Grand Seiko.

Perhaps.

Certainly, 'more expensive' is far from what I rate as best. I also don't rate 'perfection'. It doesn't exist and the closest we can get to it for me is the most elegant fit-to-purpose in a given context. After that we are moving into what I see as art.

The Daytona fails on all counts. Its not the most elegant fit-to-purpose and its not genuinely artistic in its execution.

Winning to survive is very ok with me. I find winning for its own sake to be self-reinforcing but eventually feels unrewarding. Winning is existential fast-food. Certainly, needing to win when it comes to owning trinkets seems hollow.

Seriously, when???

November 2016 - PP ref. 1518 in steel, sold for north of $11M.
Above $100K? PPs any more complicated (annual or perpetual calendars, chronographs) than the usual time-only pieces regularly sell in excess of that mark.
$900K or thereabouts? Whenever one of the vintage perpetual calendar chronographs by PP surfaces at an auction.

Which - frankly - is all as idiotic as the hype for vintage Daytonas.

Seiko, while not having made anything quite as coveted as the more rare kind of Patek, are watches made by the reasonable for the reasonable, priced reasonably.

For what it's worth, high auction results - for whatever overhyped watch, regardless of the brand - are not a measure of a brand's excellence. They're a measure of how severely debilitated the clientele of the auction houses is.

Never said they are exclusive. They are everywhere. And crazy desirable and command huge prices.

They are great and people will keep paying it and haters will keep hating.

They are the best if you can define best as:

Desirable
Recognized
The goal of most people want a proper watch

I could buy a Patek or AP, but I think they are ugly. Also 99.3897 % of the population wouldn't know what the fuck they were.

Good Dr, have you looked into the Unicorn brand that has the Rolex movement in them? One of the first Rolex watches, going up though because the secret is out.
Just an example of them

I search for those and Marconi often. Enough people ate looking that I have scored a deal.

Best deals I can find recently are obscure Tudors out of the UK.
