5 Affordable Dive Watches That Aren’t the Seiko SKX007

Postby Racer-X » March 5th 2019, 5:57pm

"When looking into an affordable dive watch, the Seiko SKX007 is guaranteed to come up more than a few times. It totally makes sense why. The 007 has a rock-solid set of specs, classic Seiko looks, and true ISO dive certification. On top of all that, it also looks great on a variety of straps thanks to the versatile black/white/steel color scheme. You can easily pick one up from a ton of different retailers, and the pre-owned market is strong, too. These are all great reasons to buy an SKX007 — unless, of course, something about it doesn’t mesh well with your taste in watches. That’s why today we’re looking at five awesome alternatives to the Seiko SKX007. All of our picks have distinctly different looks and features, but are around the same price."

Several alternatives are significantly more expensive than the SKX.

Agreed.

But they don't run 41 seconds fast/day either.

Saw 'em at one of the W&W watch fairs here. I thought they were meh.

The Citizen Promaster is like way underrated.
I bought a dive watch from them that literally had “dive” in the name. The instructions said not to dive with it - it was only meant to LOOK like a dive watch. It was also fast by more that a minute per day. Garbage. Never again. - IWG buyer on Reddit

The Loriers look kinda nice. Obviously equipped with a useless bezel, but that doesn’t matter much to a non-diver like me. The ”digital Tuna” is quite pointless. What’s the point of a dive bezel in a watch with no hands? It’s like a woman without a bosom wearing a bra.

Loamers--Shit micros. Nope.

Digital Tunas--Made for millennials who can't read time with analogue hands. Nope.

Dan Henry--Probably OK, uses a Seiko movement, doesn't have the heritage of Seiko. Maybe OK.

Citizen BN0150-28E--OK for brother-in-law who is too fucking shiftless to keep an automatic watch wound.

Orient Mako USA--An extra hundred and fifty dollars for a sapphire crystal, solid endlinks and the lume the regular Mako should have had in the first place. Nope. Regular Mako? OK.

So, as WISs, if you were forced, at gunpoint, to engage a total stranger in watch conversation wearing any of these watches, vs. the SKX007, which one would you pick?

Probably the Mako USA. The price sucks cock, but the watch doesn’t suck cock. I have the DH 1970, and it’s a nice watch for daily wear, but it loses out to the SKX, because the lume sucks cock. If not for the stuttering seconds hand of the Citizen, it’d be my pick, as it’s probably the most practical of that lot - it may be boring, but it doesn’t suck cock.

Not being an SKX007 is an issue...but the Citizen and Orient are both decent options IMO.

Potato, po-ta-to. Citizen FTW but then again I am a Citizen fanboy. Orient is close second.

Disclaimer: I actually have a 007. No animals were harmed in the making of this post.

Aqualung 500m, Apex 1000m, Divex 200m are all hard as nails and cheap as chips dive watches. I think the Divex are about £85 nowadays

I'd choose any of them over the SKX007, and you can quote me. I am SO done with Seiko thanks to their sterling longterm quality (GS is another story).
