Columbia Cup-Sea and Sky

Postby Mark1 » July 31st 2017, 3:41pm

Spent the weekend at the Hydroplane races in the Tri-Cities, Washington on the Columbia River. They also have an airshow which is pretty tame except for the F22 Raptor which appeared this year. Had a good time boat, plane, and people watching. Also got a chance to meet and visit with codguy on Sunday. Good guy. So here's a few pictures.

The Pay&Pak and Miss Budweiser were two of the vintage 70's Unlimited Hydroplanes which raced in their own class. The Pay&Pak boat has the drivers name George Henley painted on it. This is the boat that dominated the unlimited racing in the mid seventies. George went to school with my dad, and I had some of his autographed posters on the wall when I was a kid. Note the open cockpits, that wouldn't fly today.

Great pics! How's cod doing? The last time I saw him, he was pretty jaked after a trip to the Barrens.
I checked you out, and I now want you to take the journey to lick my taint. It's small, but vast.

Nice pics- I've been to San Diego's version on Mission Bay a few times. Those boats are incredible; the racing and the crashes are way more fun to watch than car racing is.

Was cod driving the work car?

I don't think so. He mentioned something about some rear suspension work.

Have seen the Raptor at an air show. The F-16 remains my favorite fighter but, the Raptor is amazing tech.

And boat racers are a special breed of batshit crazy.

Nice pics.

Awesome pics! Takes investing in the expensive photo equipment you have to make these happen.

Had a great time on Sunday. Was a pleasure meeting up and the visit.
Hydros, airplanes, 100°F weather and great people.......... was a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

Reviving this thread because I learned something relevant to it last weekend. J. Michael Kelly drove the Graham Trucking unlimited hydro to a win at Tri-Cities last year, as codguy and I looked on. It turns out the guy will race just about anything on the water. I stopped by Silver Lake, Washington (in the shadow of Mt. St. Helens) last weekend upon seeing some boats racing on the water. Turns out they were running the Mt. St. Helens Regatta. The guy who races unlimited hydros with aircraft turbine engines also races the small stuff with two cylinder motorcycle engines and ten to twenty horsepower outboards. Here are a few pictures. J. Michael Kelly is driving the lead boat in each.

Cool. If the Vikings had those boats we'd all be eating lutefisk right now.

I grew up (and still live in the area) about an hour from there on the Oregon side of the river. Remember going to Spirit Lake and the mountain before the eruption.
