Where Are $2.6 Million Cars Made?

We’ve had a surprising amount of access to the Bugatti Chiron. Last spring, I sat in the first Chiron to come stateside. Over the summer, we got an exclusive photo shoot with an example in Los Angeles for Gear Patrol Magazine Issue Three. Before that, of course, the world learned of its astronomical stats: 1,500 horsepower, a top speed of 260 mph. And that $2.6 million price tag…

The first cars (of 70 to be produced this year) are slated to be delivered within the next couple months. If that seems slow, consider that it takes a team of 20 people an average of six months (often nine or more) to assemble the 1,800+ individual parts by hand. Of course, for that price, each Chiron is customized for its owner. According to Bugatti options include 23 paint colors, 31 colors of upholstery leather, eight Alcantara colors as well as 30 stitching, 18 carpet and 11 belt colors.

This happens in Molsheim, France, where Bugatti had to extensively modify its own factory, called “Atelier,” to accommodate Chiron production. Most notably, Bugatti says, is the new conductive floor, which automatically dissipates electric charge. This is our first look inside that very factory.
