Unexpected Ways You Might Damage A Mechanical Watch

Unexpected Ways You Might Damage A Mechanical Watch

Timepiece repairs can be expensive and often take a long time, which is why you would want to avoid damaging a watch.

For most people it’s obvious that throwing your watch against a wall, running over it with a Bentley, or smashing it with a hammer are things to to avoid.

Simply by wearing it on a Africa road trip, will do it every time.

Oh, and don't magnetize it either, too.

I have found that trying to make a bed with this guy around is difficult, he also makes it impossible to set watches out to photograph. He takes his fat foot and smacks them around. Telling him no just makes him more determined. Fortunately he just bats them over, one hasn't actually hit the wooden floor yet.

Our late cat Sydney (who was all black, just like this fine fellow) once stole Mrs. C's Movado museum watch and put it into one of her shoes. For six months Mrs. C was sure that she had lost it off her wrist, and was inconsolable.

I've heard hammering cabriole legs might do so.

Yup. The other day I was reading a Hondickee article, and busted the strap off my Rangeman.

They don't like sudden impacts with concrete garage floors either.

You should avoid dropping a frozen turkey out of an airplane onto your watch.

You should avoid dropping a 15-pound bowling ball directly onto one. I used to have an Omega, now it's done, brother, can you spare a dime.

Nothing wrong with mine ;) However like all mechanicals it didn't like being dropped, as a result going from a convenient and pretty steady +3/4 sec/day to about minus 15.

Also things not to do with a mechanical: wear one when you're shifting big PA gear - magnetised, next day it was about a minute fast as the hairspring stuck together. (There you go, codguy, happy now ya stalker?)

Constant adjustment via the crown to compensate for the cheerfully shit timekeeping of a Citizen dive watch lead to gritty operation and then it stopped screwing down completely. I never wore it in the wet again after that despite it being a dive watch.

I wish fewer of my watches had screw down crowns. It's just one more thing that can wear out. I appreciate that it contributes to water resistance, but I really only need 1 or 2 watches for swimming. Then rest could be push pull and provide sufficient water resistance for my needs.

That’s the truth. I would bet that tile floors kill more watches than all other causes combined.

Oh, hell, yeah. Concrete-floored foyers, anyone?
