I've seen the same thing happen during actual armed robberies where "innocent" shoppers saw their chance and took off with the jewelry they were looking at, and, unfortunately, it's pretty common. I've always wondered when a legit thief would create a big enough distraction to accomplish something like this. I DID once see a video wherein a shopper took off with the goods and then returned them to the store after everything had settled down...the excuse? "I was so scared I didn't realize I even had it on me." No charges were filed, but I imagine that about half the police officers -- especially the grizzled old street cops -- thought it was all bullshit. Either way, though, in those rare cases of immediately-returned loot, I tend to believe the person...or not. :???:
