"Trademarks have arisen in manufactures, which they are not"

Considered one of the watchmakers, Jean-Daniel Dubois, director of Vaucher, tells the story of these months of crisis.

- This winter, the watch division of the Sandoz Family Foundation has suffered criticism from a prominent blogger, speaking of half a billion invested in vain, ambitions disproportionate, sales at a loss ...

- As soon as he Industrialized its production, a subcontractor can live only by releasing a certain volume of parts - it is a question of cost price but also of reliability in their machining. A rule that imposes itself on high-end as well as mechanical movements animating more economical models. This year is the time of the rebound: everybody works 100%, the reductions in working time are behind us. And, no, until now Vaucher does not lose money.

- To what extent does the foundation remain attached to this watchmaking pole?

- The foundation is very proud to have such an industrial tool, capable of mastering the manufacture of exceptional watches whose entirety is Swiss made ... and supplied by its own entities. Today, this pole is at maturity. All of this has to be developed to become more profitable. An example? We refocus the brand (editor's note: Parmigiani) on iconic products.

- Its rise took place while many brands claimed the name "manufactures" by manufacturing their own calibres ... Have your customers become your competitors?

- The brands wanted a time to take ownership, but the phenomenon fades. Some have learned the hard way of setting up an industrial tool - it takes experience, time, money - in a word, the support of an entrepreneurial shareholder. A number? Developing a movement requires placing between 4 and 5 million on the table. Let us add that many brands have been posed in manufactures, which they are in fact not. But the truth about the real manufacture of watches is bursting more and more - especially thanks to social networks.

Vaucher had to part with a quarter of his staff. Further restructuring to be feared?

- We have descended to the minimum size in terms of numbers to maintain our know-how. Last year, we managed to limit the breakdown: thanks to Richard Mille's long Of those affected, only five have yet to find work.
