Zodiac Quietly Making Some of the Best Value Watches

Postby Racer-X » June 2nd 2017, 10:29pm

by Andrew Connor "When most people hear “Zodiac,” they think of astrology or one of history’s most elusive serial killers. Most do not picture a Swiss watchmaker that has been around since 1882. Like many of their fellow Swiss watchmakers, Zodiac didn’t survive the so-called “Quartz Crisis” of the ’70s and ’80s and has since fallen into obscurity. Which is a shame — for a long time it was an accomplished maker of tool watches, having created one of the world’s first commercial dive watches alongside Blancpain and Rolex in 1953. It has also experimented with high-beat movements and avant-garde design."

Ummm...that's actually really good. I'm not into pilot watches at all and yet that one pulls on me big time

Waiting for them to make a high-beat "mystery dial" re-issue....

I have a nine year old Zodiac quartz chronograph that's so durable and still doesn't have a nick on it. I guess I'm no snob, since I always thought the quality of the brand was ok. As for this one - COSC certification for a grand? Damn Skippy!

Yeah, no shit.

I've only owned 2 that I no longer have. Besides the one above these Zodiacs have been catching my eye lately.

I see a bit of the Seiko 6138 in this chrono...

I've owned one Zodiac; the Oceanaire with a Claro movement. The model number escapes me but it was the powder blue dial with white markers.

I have to say, it was an extremely wearable and remarkably robust watch for the $350 I paid for it at the time. I remember a lot of controversy about the Claro movement and its origins, but the watch overall shit on a lot of watches at that price point.

I did end up selling it, but truthfully if I ever saw another one at the right time I would totally rebuy it.

Edit: this is the model I had. Really great look

Some dude named Alain bought it lo,those many years ago.
Whoever owns it now has some serious WL DNA in their watch box.

Ditto. The Zodie Oceanaire was easily one of the coolest budget divers ever made; big but balanced, nicely finished, good bracelet, vanilla-scented straps. Even the name, Oceanaire, was fucking cool.

After a few months of wear the vanilla scented straps smell more like lutefisk.

I had a Dragon Wing and an Oceanaire, and as I recall, gifted them both. I still have a Calame with the D/D chrono module. Still one of my favorite weekenders.

Like the pilot - nice they are still making cool stuff for decent prices. COSC even.
