A Classic Watch, with a Twist – The Speake-Marin Resilience

Postby Racer-X » May 22nd 2017, 6:39pm

by Tom Mulraney "Finding a great dress watch, it seems, is a never-ending challenge. On the one hand, you want a watch that complements your outfit and stands out, but at the same time doesn’t draw too much unnecessary attention to itself. It needs to be different enough to set you apart from every other person in the room wearing a nice suit and a (insert major brand name here) watch on their wrist, but still have a sufficient degree of brand recognition so you’re don’t have to spend the entire night explaining to people why it’s a nice watch. The Speake-Marin Resilience in 18k red gold doesn’t quite satisfy all these criteria, but it does come close."

I like the seconds hand. Not so much the other hands, crown, lugs and long skinny Roman numerals.

I don't like the hour hand. And because it's a Speake-Marin, it has these very distinctive lugs, which some like, some don't. I, for one, don't. If not for these two things, it would be good. Then again, by Speake-Marin standards, it's very conservative, and that said, not bad.

I would wear that any day, I get sort of a Breguet Marine vibe. The lugs do look challenging, would need to try it on for size and comfort.

Don't like gold, the hands, the crown, or the roman numerals...other than that its perfect!

I like it. Not the hour hand so much, but that's minor.

3/4 erect.

Adding to the early consensus, I don't care for the hour hand or the lugs either. I am a sucker for a minimalist white dial with blued hands though.

I really like his designs. I would lie to you and tell you it looks better in person, but the reality is, it looks pretty good in pictures too... at least to me.

Okay with the hand set, crown, Romans, everything - except for those goddamn clunky screws on the lugs.
