97 years of Titoni watches

Postby koimaster » August 17th 2017, 9:57am

For almost a century, Titoni has been creating watches in Grenchen. Infact Titoni watches have a long history with India. Titoni was one of the first Swiss Watches that was actively doing business in India. Titoni started selling watches in India just after India gained its independence. Its popularity in India was unparalleled in the 1950’s and 60’s . However in 1975 when Emergency was declared in India, Titoni chose to leave the country as the environment was completely unfavorable for the luxury watch manufacturer. After a break of over four decades, Ethos was able to convince the owner to re-enter India and bring its stunning Master Series, Airmaster Series, Miss Lovely collection and 5 other collections back to India. The Ethos team looks into its milestones and captures a few images from their factory.

A wee bit too much marketing talk in that article. Well, understandable, as it's on the site of the retailer (Ethos Watches boutiques), but still... "Giant leaps into the world of Haute Horlogerie?" Aaaaarghhhhh, how about no?

And a lot of mistakes there, too. That advert, allegedly from 1930, is quite certainly not from 1930. 1940 sounds more plausible, given the design of the watches pictured, and the fact that one of them has a sweep second, which was anything but common in 1930. Wristwatches with a sweep second hand only became popular by the late 1930s (c.1938-1939).

Also, to call Titoni, even the way it was back in the day, a "luxury" brand is quite an exaggeration. Decent? Yes. Luxury? Nope. The part "its popularity in India was unparalleled in the 1950s and 60s" is also far from the truth- the Indian market did have one brand enjoying great popularity, but that brand was Favre-Leuba...
