Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76, his family has said.

The British theoretical physicist was known for his groundbreaking work with black holes and relativity, and was the author of several popular science books including A Brief History of Time.

His children, Lucy, Robert and Tim, said: "We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today.

"He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years."

Obituary: Stephen Hawking
They praised his "courage and persistence" and said his "brilliance and humour" inspired people across the world.

"He once said, 'It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love.' We will miss him forever," they said.

His last words were "I can't believe I was wrong about all that shit." Then he chuckled and passed.

RIP to a pretty amazing person.

What, 31st of April? :)

I don't think he was quite the angel, but a great scientist and by all accounts an inspiration in the classic, rather than hyperbolic, sense.

Unfortunately, his last words came over his speaky-thing two hours after he passed, which was probably kind of creepy.

No great loss...just another anti-Semitic piece of skunk offal. They should've thrown him out of the zero-g plane so he could feel that zero-g feeling right up until the time his misshapen head hit the ground at X mph...fucker could've calculated the final speed before smashing back into terra firma.

Just because something is unreliable doesn't mean it isn't great. Take, for example, Stephen Hawking. Great man, but most of him doesn't work.

+1

As a side he wasn't in the top one hundred theoretical physicists worldwide. His work was considered less than cutting edge. His Carl Saganish everyman delivery of content along with his handicap endeared him to the masses.

Plenty of academics share the same sentiment, look around.
From Quora:
"That he is a first rate physicist and a staggering human being, whichever way you slice it."
" Stephen Hawking is, without any doubt, among the top 1,000 physicists of the 20th century, arguably among the top 1,00, but certainly not among the top 10."

Hawking was the every man's physicist. Ask 90% on the street to name a physicist and "Hawking" would be your answer.

That may have changed with The Big Bang Theory television show exposing the public to other names but not by much, I imagine.

Hawking was able to explain physics in a way most who were interested could grasp, at least as much as physics can be.

And I have to admire a man that despite a horribly debilitating illness was still able to impact the world in the ways he did.
