White Feather.....Carlos Hathcock II

Postby codguy » October 17th 2017, 12:04pm

I met Mr. Hathcock some 20 years ago (give or take) and had a long chat with him.
Never met a more sincere & gentle man in my life.

He is clearly one of two American Heroes in my eyes.......

Carlos Hathcock & Skipper Charles "Nels" Tanner.

I read the first book about him Marine Sniper. Will have to look at some of the others on Kindle.

Excerpt from artical " he immediately qualified as an expert with the M1 rifle, a .30-06 that was used widely by Marines and Army soldiers during WW II. It was a heavy rifle, and he could hit the 18-inch-diameter bull’s-eye from 500 yards at the rifle range time after time. "

Probably from the prone position with iron sites. From 500 yards I hit 9 out of 10 from the prone position with a well used off the shelf M-14, iron sites and standard ball issue ball ammunition. First 9 found black. The tenth was "maggie drawers" WTF!, total miss of the entire target. Marines in the Butts (pulling targets) mark each shot with a a white disc on a ten foot pole. This way you can compare where you feel the round should have hit as to where it actually hit. Many times you know you yanked or pushed the shot. Before it's marked make a call and if the disk matches your call that's a good thing and you can adjust accordingly. I called it in the black left 11 o'clock. The entire target was 6'x6' . Piece of shit burnt out MBR. Then again Hathcock probably had an off the shelf rifle also. I turned down an offer for sniper training for Embassy duty. What stood Hathcock out was his bushcraft and drive. Marine maksmanship is legendary. Put glass on any rifle and a Marine will clean house with it, just sayin.
