And Pfizer stock plummets on the news that their single largest Viagra customer has died.

Yup. Growing up, there were cooler guys than Hefner (Neil Armstrong and Steve McQueen, for two) but in terms of the whole '60s and '70s zeitgeist (!), the guy who summed everything up was Hef. Not only did his magazine launch millions of first male orgasms, he also did a lot in helping integration of the arts. He also laid more pipe than Alyeska. Granted, as he grew older, he became a walking caricature of himself, a creepy old goat who wandered around wearing pajamas in the middle of the day, but back in the day, there was nobody like Hef.

RIP.

Makes you wonder if "He's gone to a better place" really applies to Hef.

Say it, brother. I used to watch those late night Friday Playboy specials on ABC when I was about 17, and I dreamed of going to the mansion, being in the grotto, etc. Yeah, it's the typical male fantasy, but it worked for me.

This story was originally published in the August 30th, 2000 issue of Rolling Stone.

He is not merely famous. He is fame. He is the most famous man, with the most famous house, in the most famous neighborhood in the world. He has the most famous parties, with the most famous guests, and their fame is the source of his own. Because he is famous for his work, and he is famous for his women, but mostly, he is famous for his friends, that swirling swarm of spectacular celebrities who perpetually grace his grounds. He is famous for being immersed in them, for being saturated and inundated with their fame. He is famous, then, by social osmosis. Famous for being famous among the famous.....

I remember reading that back in the early sixties, Hefner spent an entire year in his Chicago mansion. Never going outside. When asked why, he said he had no need to leave. I guess he was right. He finally walked outside to check out a snowfall. It is said that he also drank 16 Pepsi's a day. A walking contradiction. A likeable hedonist.
We called another exterminator to take care of the rat problem in the basement. This one hasn't come out either.
