Hello

Hello

Postby mnmz » January 30th 2017, 12:56am

Hi All - My name is Mike and my interest in watches is relatively new. Definitely don't qualify as a collector yet, but the more I learn, the more interested I am. The only time piece I currently own that I expect is worth mentioning is a recently purchased Speedy Professional. I hope to add to my collection soon but probably won't be making another investment like that for a while (have a couple kids heading to college soon). I'm still learning what I like, taking in some of the history, and trying to understand the various advancements and mechanics.

In any event, while I unfortunately won't have much to add except questions, I look forward to learning from you all.

Intelligent questions are welcome. Lets see some pics of the Speedie :-)

I have known people who ended up with nothing than a Speedmaster Pro. It is an Icon, a toolwatch, elegant enough to be worn as a dress watch (probably not in a really formal way), it is of very good quality and ... the history. :-)
A very good start anyways.

Since you are starting out, just remember quality over quantity!

You can thank me later.

The truly nice thing about integrated strap/bracelet watches..... it prevents someone from fucking them up with a gay NATO strap.

Welcome! A Speedmaster is a nice start of the collection- one of the most versatile watches out there. Just don't trick yourself into thinking that it's your only watch- the hobby is addictive, and in no time you'll likely have quite a bit.

It is absolutely vital that you ask questions, as many as you can, and whenever you need to! If the part about wanting to understand "the various advancements and mechanics" is any hint of wanting to get into vintage watches, then you will find yourself in a rather pressing need of asking the right questions. Only remember to ask them before you buy- I lost track of how many times have I been forced to deliver the bad news to those who asked the right questions, only they did so post factum...

In the space of one hour is Babylon the Great thrown down. Not a stone remained standing upon another and the reek of her burning did poison all the earth and the smoke thereof did blot out the sun so that noon-day did appear as midnight. Alas Babylon!

Welcome to Watchlords, mnmz....um, what's a mnmz? Nevermind. No, really; that's a dumb question...uh, mnmz...

Soooo, uh, welcome to Watchlords...mnmz. Post early, post often...there ARE no dumb questions, except, of course, to ask what a mnmz is. The only bad thing you can do is to post just once, then go off and pick lilies, like there's no tomorrow, or something...mnmz.

Four words that should never be spoken here -- and in this order -- are: "Invicta Mickey Mouse Watch." Trust me. I KNOW.

If you're a conservative, avoid the Battle Zone. Trust me. I KNOW.

Avoid members from Rio Lindo and Perth-Fremantle. TRUST ME. I KNOW!

That is all. Go and frolic. Pick flowers. But watch out for the bees...they sting. But the good news is that you'll hear them coming...they make a sort of a "mnmz-mnmz-mnmz-mnmz-mnmz" sound...

Thanks for the warm welcome and tips. Vintage watches do interest me so if/when I do go down that path, I will definitely take that advice. As for quality over quantity, that is my goal from here on out. Only wish I could go back and revisit some of my purchases over the years.

So the username, mnmz....I'm sorry to disappoint but it's not all that interesting or inspired by the muppets. Just the first initial of all in my immediate family. I'm a CPA and sometimes display a remarkable lack of creativity to prove it.

I'll post pics of the Speedmaster as soon as I figure it out.

Hidey-ho! Welcome.
