Hello, folks!

Hello, folks!

Postby MKTheVintageBloke » December 7th 2016, 8:36pm

Me name's Mike, I've been collecting vintage watches for a while already. My main area of interest are wristwatches made between the 1930s and 1970s. Favourite brands: Zenith, Omega, Eterna, Tissot. I especially enjoy identifying and authenticating vintage Omegas.

Without further ado, here are some of the gems:

Thanks for the welcome, guys!

@bedlam: the lume on the Turler is pretty much dead- when exposed to strong light, it will give off a veeeery faint glow in total darkness for a minute or two... But then again, odd as it might sound, I never cared much about functioning lume.

These 5 constitute the best part of my collection, but I do have more watches enjoyable no less.

Damn, looks like I made a small mistake in my post, the Omega is from 1975, not 1952.

As to Invicta, they used to make good watches...40 years ago. Their current watches are the last thing that I could ever possibly be obsessed with.

Sweet Fancy Moses, the gold dial Eterna and the Tissot are just fantastic.

One of the better watch collection intros from a new member.

Yeah, neither do I.

Just wanted to see if I could get you to try and defend the lume on vintage watches...it could have been pretty funny :-)

Terrific first post. Enjoyed the photos. The Eterna is particularly cool.

I have a couple of old Omegas, but I already know they're 60s/70s stuff that's pretty impossible to get fixed at this point. Nice to see yours in fine running order.

I pointed the site out to him, and he said he likes the site and might try to join. He's a straight arrow, he posts as mkws on WUS and is very knowledgeable about vintage Omegas!

Glad you joined buddy, you know you're gonna give me that Tissot before I die, right? :D

@svaglic: bobbee indeed has recommended the forum to me. WUS is good, but the atmosphere there is kind of stiff, it's a bit like a horological Amish community there. So I couldn't miss an opportunity to discuss watches more freely. Rat? If you suggest that I'm up to some rather nefarious stuff, allow me to assure you that I'm not. If you perhaps meant rattus norvegicus, the feral rodent with a particularly nasty-looking tail, dwelling in sewers, I'm not that either.

@TemerityB: Thanks! And BTW, you can post up the Omegas in a separate thread in the Vintage or Omega section here (if you did so before, just post a link), and I'll be more than happy to have a look at them. As long as I know the reference number and the calibre, I'm usually able to find out as much as it's possible to be found out about an Omega. As to repairs, you could try sending the watches to Al Archer in Canada, vintage Omegas are his speciality- he's got access to Omega parts, and has a stellar reputation.

@bedlam: Lume in vintage watches, if nicely aged, serves well as a part of the watch's "aged" look. That said, it is useful, but only in terms of aesthetics. Sometimes someone will say "but my Speedmaster still glows!" Well, good for him, then. If the zinc sulphide base still works, this can be the case, because most of the tritium is gone, given its rather short half-life.

@bobbee: Thanks for introducing me, mate! Will have to think about the Tissot... ;)

Hello and welcome to the deep end of the cesspool, Mike. Always glad to see a fellow Omeeger lover arrive here. A good portion of my collection is vintage, and a goodly portion of my vintage pieces are Omeegers, including my dad's Seamaster from the early 1970's, and my Omeeger quartz, which was my Hah Skrool gradjiation presnut. Here are a coupl'a pix:

(Don't know just how I managed to forget this one when it came time to shoot the group shot)

FWIW, Svagy is one of my best friends here, and I trust her instincts implicitly. That doesn't mean I think you're a rat, or some such thing; it simply means that she's not a crackpot who's out to bust your ovoids.

Again, welcome to the fosse septique...

@Mortuus: Nice, I especially like the Geneve and Seamaster De Ville on top of the pile, however the Chronostop is pretty amazing too. The 1970s quartz is cool as well.

@biglove: Other hobbies? Not for now, I tried guitar, but it didn't work out- maybe I'll get back to it someday. Also hope to get my sea skipper's license in the next two years, for now I have to get more hours of experience at sea.
The dial of the Eterna appears to be gold-ish, but that's just the extraordinarily even patina; the brighter area around the centre suggests, that it used to be a light silver colour.

@four of diamonds: That's one lovely Connie... Calibre 354, I presume?

Here's another gem from my collection, a '50 Tissot:
