While some of our Euro-centric members here may disagree (although they'll be fucking wrong), nobody does quartz better than Seiko. A few years ago I was going through some boxes of shit I hadn't looked in for 20 years or more, and found an old Seiko quartz chrono I bought in college. It was dead, naturally, but I jimmied off the back, found that the old cell hadn't leaked, and replaced it, and like yours, it started working again.

This shouldn't be a surprise, since the first quartz watch to market was, of course, a Seiko.

Oh, fuck. Stay the fuck away from the Seiko kinetics. They suck balls. If you're an old-timer like Mort, and (unlike Mort) just wear a single watch, they're fine. But if you change watches out, keeping those fucking kinetics charged is a pain in the fucking ass. I love Seiko, but the kinetic is a has-been technology.

Cue the kinetic lovers:

"Oh! The early Seiko kinetics were like that, but now they're much better."

Bullshit. There are some weird-ass chargers you can buy that actually charge Seiko kinetics. There's no way that Seiko would have made these sumbitches if it wasn't physically impossible to charge, you know, Seiko kinetics by fucking wearing them. Also, it kind of reminds me of the GM ads from the 1990s--"Oh, we knew that GM cars were fucking shit in the 1980s, but today, they're much better."

Also, the watch from Joma is too fucking big and the hands are too fucking short. So, lost, you know you can always get the straight dope from kindly Uncle Conjurer.

Here you go:

http://www.watches88.com/pd-orient-cons ... 05003w.cfm

Three times the cost of the Seiko, but a true GMT automatic, with power reserve indicator, manufacture movement, sapphire crystal, etc. Pure class.

Oh! The early Seiko kinetics were like that, but now they're much better. You can even get a special charger for them and...

Oh...

The esteemed Conjurer beat me to it :-(

I was a big fan of the one I had. I thought of it more like an auto. If you didn't wear it, it would eventually stop. But the charge lasted for something like 3-6 months. It probably helped that I was cycling a lot at the time.

That seems to be the issue with kinetic. They work great for some, but are a royal pain in the bum for others.

Cool technology, but.

O.K., getting some serious wood over the Orient watch. Trying to read up on the history, etc. (Does not seem like a lot out there).
I like the metal band on this one, but the actual watch that conjur posted.

I would think in low light, the contrast of the bottom face would be easier to see.
How much maintenance (i.e., how often do you have to send it somewhere for a tuneup/cleaning) would a watch like this need for daily use?

Also, really like the magnifier as seen on this review. (Hoping posting a link from there is not a BS move on my part) http://forums.watchuseek.com/f410/new-a ... 72516.html

Yup.

Actually, Orient movements are famous for being exceptionally durable. Based on early Seiko automatics, you can find examples of Orients worn for many years without any sort of service necessary.

Orient is a pretty large company, but outside of watch fora, they are pretty unknown in North America--this is one of the reasons I'm an Orient fanboi, because I've seen only one other guy wearing one in real life. They are wholly owned by Seiko now, but seem to keep their own corporate identity. They specialize in mechanical watches, but offer quite a few in quartz (these movements seem to be made by Seiko). Somewhat surprisingly, Orient is very popular in South America, and have manufacturing sites there, as well as a whole bunch of models only available there.

When researching various models, be aware that O's method of IDing their various watches is somewhat opaque--it depends on where the watch is marketed, as well, maybe, as the day of the week.

This has become my daily wearer:

I also wear this world time job sometimes:

I've bought several watches from W88, no problems at all. They're located in KL, so shipping can be a little slow, like a week or two.

If light conditions are a concern think about a GMT hand that has a dissimilar color to the hour and minute hands.
