When the topic of what, if anything, was to be banned under various visions of utopia "shotguns" were generally left off the table.

Right up until I fucked it up with a picture of a Saiga-12 with a drum magazine.

To the considerable dismay of some traditionalists the Saiga-12 has been showing up at skeet and sporting clay facilities from time to time. While this gives me some mirth I admit to preferring my Silver Pigeon III O/U for such applications. Meantime a fully-licensed select-fire S-12 is a recurring character in the MHI series of novels. You might check them out.

As one who has shot a few 25's on the trap range with a 19" saiga-12, to the dismay of the $2000-$7000 O/U crowd, I am most likely, personally responsible for the later implemented rule regarding minimum barrel length of 24"s and ONLY standard stock (non-pg) shotguns.

The looks on their faces when I beat them, was priceless. BUT I did buy a 28" field O/U because it was better suited for the sport... I just fell out of interest in it.

So that would explain all of the deaths by guns in this country.

Oh, that was going on long before you showed up. You just poked it but it was only sleeping.

There was a time in the not too distant past when I considered such phrases as "killed by a gun" to be extremely sloppy use of the language. People never said "they were killed by cars" when they meant to say "they were killed by drunk drivers".

Nevertheless, recent reporting suggests that I may have to reconsider my views on the matter.

In the wake of the Nice, France attack it was indeed widely reported that revelers were killed by a "truck" rather than a "terrorist" or "deranged driver".

Seriously.

"Scene of Devastation After Truck Kills Revelers" -NBC News

"Bastille Day attack: truck kills at least 80 people in Nice" -The Guardian

"Truck kills dozens in Nice, France" -USA TODAY

Gosh, if you went by the headlines, you'd be excused for thinking that things had gone all Steven King out there, what with trucks just up and killing people...

Rather of a pity. I had long maintained firearms were singled out for this sort of thing but it seems I've been proven wrong by recent events.

Hawk,

Unfortunately, if it had been anything other than the "PROTECTED RELIGION" they would have made it clear.

Oh, I don't know. The old boy's religion and affiliations were made quite public early on yet the "death by truck? narrative persisted.

It's just sloppy reporting.

It's only a matter of time before our less pleasant headlines are re-written:

"Fireworks and kitchenware disrupt Boston Marathon"
"Fertilizer and fuel oil conspire to take down Alfred P. Murrah building"

Presidential candidate vows: "I'm not afraid to take on the APSA (Association of Pool and Spa Professionals). The next time a child dies at the hands of an in ground pool or a dive watch leaks in a hot tub I'll see them sued out of business! WHO'S WITH ME?!"

...that sort of thing.

Jesus! Dan Haggerty on the spike?? This is as nostalgia-killing as that Nipsy-Russell-putting-small-rodents-up-Bob-Keeshan's-backside thread we did a few years ago.
