Hello from South Africa

Hello from South Africa

Postby peturbed » June 8th 2016, 11:43am

Hi everyone

My name is Peter and I'm from Durban, South Africa.

I've collected watches for about 30 years and sadly Ive been pruning down my collection, but the love remains. Why? Well, I'm getting a bit older and I don't want my wife to have to deal with all of the watch and the dealer sharks out there if I drop dead of a heart attack. But the main reason is that South Africa is a reasonably dangerous place to live in and having been hijacked twice, losing a Rolex on each occasion, I know keep most of my collection in a bank vault and rotate a few around every now and again. I've been gradually selling on eBay but I haven't got the heart to sell my older Rolexes and a good few others. Well, we might emigrate to escape this place one day, so I can't give them all up. However the interest remains and the passion and as a collector it's in my blood so I guess I will always be on the lookout for good watches.

I've learnt lot and made some mistakes, but made some good buys, but I have found the info on here quite refreshing and not filled with B/S so I look forward to being a part of this family. I'm in tourism and I'm a fine art photographer as well. But not the best watch photographer.

Anyway, greetings to all.

Older Rolexes you say?
A few, like a nice 5513, a older pepsi and a few datejusts/dates, and OQ1700 and a Speedking from 1933. I had a 5508 James Bond which I sold to a guy in Boston and a Big Orange hand Paul Newman 1655 - both gone now (why did I sell those????) - but nothing that puts me in the Hodinkee league, sorry to say...And a good few newer models as well..

If this all checks out, this guy from down under sounds worthy.

If not, he is pulling our chains and the toilet will flush clockwise.

I'll give a howdy at this point.

Standards? Rich dudes?
Yeah....no.

When traveling about the countryside, I might suggest strapping on the Mighty Hydromax. No one would think of stealing it, and anyone wearing one would be considered insane, and probably dangerous.

Welcome Peter, do you know a Mr. Tim Temple? I hear he is quite the accomplished photographer, published by National Geographic. Or so I understand.

Welcome. Very nice collection. By coincidence today I am wearing my 1956 Omega Constellation. Looks exactly like your 1957, except mine is 10K gold plate over SS.

It was my Dad's watch, bought in the year of my birth. Long may you wear yours!
