Gavox Avidiver Review

Postby Racer-X » May 26th 2017, 3:37pm

by Benjamin Lowry "Gavox is a Belgian micro-brand started in 2011 by Michael Happé, grandson of one of the legendary Flying Tigers. With DNA like that, Gavox produces, as you might imagine, aviation-oriented watches at reasonable prices.

We’ve covered a few of their pieces before - the Aurora and the Squadron - and found them to be capable and interesting watches. Having cemented their place in the micro-brand field, Gavox have stepped up their game by producing their first automatic watch, the Gavox Avidiver, which stands for aviation diver. The hybrid name might irk some people who think Gavox is trying to please everyone, but the watch proved to be a solid daily wearer."

Holy shit, Ariel actually managed to criticise a watch. May wonders never cease.

Unfortunately he missed the big criticism and made a smaller one. The reflector crown likely has sufficient seals to be ok at least at the water surface (his concern was about getting it wet at all). What he doesn't mention is that the watch doesn't have an elapsed time measurement system (like a bezel). An internal pip moves around the dial to mark the start of the dive but that is all. You then have to count the minutes manually around the dial to work out the elapsed time - there is no bezel as such.

I really like the look of it, but as a dive watch this is a fail.

That's either some of the worst photography I've ever seen on that site, or it's the biggest-thrown together mess I've seen reviewed in a long time. From the case to the caseback (particularly ghastly) to the dial to the preposterous strap, that thing looks like something that would make only someone like Larry Magen proud.

Probably just me, but it looks like it should come free in a box of Kaboom cereal.

I like my first Gavox Aurora and have almost purchased the Avidiver several times.
Highly likely that I'll eventually pop for one.
Probably the silver w/black dial.

I usually like watches with SuperCompressor-style cases. Usually. Not this one.
