Tag Heuer Link Quartz Chronograph

Tag Heuer Link Quartz Chronograph

I'm not supposed to be buying watches right now, with contracts only supplying 1/2 time/income. Some of you that have known me for years might remember that my wife had a liquidation business that sold open-box items including watches. They were customer returns, near new or basically new. That was my source of low cost watches for some years. But that business ended when her best supplier ceased to sell watches. Well, her supplier sent her some watches to sell and this is one of those. I can't refuse a low price on a model I have wanted for a couple of years.

Here it is:

I used to have an older version of this and I have missed it ever since selling it about 3 years ago. This is that earlier one:

I used to wear that one a lot. Appearance is the most important factor for me to buy a watch. Strangely, I've never really been overly attached the look of most of the Tag Heuer Link series. This model looks a little generic to me, a bit like a $250 Seiko. It's certainly not ugly, but not outstanding enough in my taste to justify the price. But in spite of the average appearance I can't get over the functionality of this model and the feel on the wrist. I am surprised that function, build quality, and comfort weigh so heavily over appearance in my appreciation of this watch. It's all totally worth it to me.

The 4-hand chrono does 10th of a second. It does up to 12 hours. Split timing is supported. Then there is a standard timing bezel. Perhaps most valuable to me: the movement has a jump hour on the main hour hand so with the crown half way out you turn the hour hand back and forth without stopping the running of minutes and seconds. That also takes date forward and back. That is perfect for my regular international travel across the International Date Line. I guess if there is such a thing as a tool watch then this might be the swiss army knife of watches. Hey, I also have a decent collection of swiss army knives.

In spite of so many features and a somewhat cluttered dial, the hands are bold enough to be instantly legible. The case and bracelet are really solid. Of the hundreds of watches I have owned I don't think I've found a clasp that seems more secure. The bracelet is probably the most comfortable I have ever found. The domed crystal feels nice but make it hard to photograph. 42mm diameter is about perfect for my taste, although this looks a bit smaller than most 42mm. This is the perfect grab and go quartz, reliable accuracy, with high build quality, all around.

I'm one of the few Tag fans (at least on blogs and fan sites) that will openly admit I'm a Tag fan. Sounds like you scored pretty well.

Amazing, too - I actually like your newer Link better than the older one. With Tag, for me, it's usually the other way around; I much prefer the older 2000 Profsessional watches way more than the new Aquaracers, as the quartz ones these days only sell for twice what they're worth. Looks like you don't have any problems getting a good deal tho.

An outstanding watch, Mike. I've thought a lot of the Tags out there are a lot nicer than they get credit for on the forums.
