Half Past the Hour blog

Update, February 2013: Having just reinvigorated my interest in photography with some new gear I’ve decided to start posting some photos of subjects other than watches; this makes the blog a useful channel for my “creative endeavours” although it does change the original intent somewhat. Anyway, let’s see how it goes, but for now you’ll find all photos of stuff other than watches – unsurprisingly – under “Watches Aside” in the menu bar above.

I’m also happy to take commissions if you fancy having some nice high-resolution photos of your watch collection for the wall or just to keep in an album or on your computer, and can supply a few testimonials in this respect if required.

*************************************************

A few years ago, I looked at my two watches one morning – a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date and a Tag Heuer 6000 chronograph – and asked myself whether I really needed more than one watch. Having provided myself with an answer, I then proceeded to sell both of them; source a long yearned-for Rolex Submariner at a good price; and join a couple of watch forums to see what I could learn about the history of my watch and – perhaps – take part in some general chat. That final decision, to participate in the world of the online watch collector, opened my eyes to a whole new horological universe.

Like most people in the position I found myself, I was like a kid in a candy store. Buying and selling like there was no tomorrow, I worked my way through about 40 watches within the space of a year. Yes, I liked them, but for some reason I never loved them. They were… I don’t know, soulless. I didn’t know what the problem was (in fact, I didn’t even know there was a problem) but what I did realise was that – over time – my tastes were changing. The older watches that I used to look at with a degree of bemusement were starting to appeal to me and I found myself researching the world of vintage, which I was slowly realising was where my interest really lay.

The rest, as they say, is history…

I’m not new to the world of blogging nor, in truth, to photo-blogging. However, this is the first time that I’ve started a blog with the primary purpose of showing or discussing the watches that I own, have owned in the past, want to own in the future or simply love. It began as just some photos with, perhaps, the odd word to add some interest or clarity; over time, the words became a little more important and now I tend to post a mixture of the two (actually, there’s now also a fair bit of “off topic” content as well, although hopefully it provides some additional interest). If you do happen to stop by, I hope there’s something here to give you a moment’s enjoyment; oh, and if you fancy writing a “guest post”, and have some good hi-res images to go with the text, drop me a line!

With the lilt of Irish laughter

Every day and in every way

Now forever and ever after."
