what kind of camera are you using for photos?

Postby koimaster » February 8th 2010, 10:02am

I broke down and purchased a Canon PowerShot SX200 IS for just under $300. Makes me a better photographer already. Of course anything would be an improvement over before.

I use a Canon G10. It gives complete control, only an SLR gives more. I've been holding off on buying an SLR until 35mm full frame sensors are in lower budget cameras.

Panasonic DMZ-TZ1 digital. Had it for a few years now, not the greatest by far, but it does a decent job. I don't use a lightbox so I'm stuck for waiting for good daylight coming thru the skylights inside.

In the past, I took photos that were actually used in national sports magazines - just outdoor stuff like baseball and indoor stuff like boxing. But it was the end of the film era then - and I got a different job, so had no reason to shoot for years. Back in the day, I shot with what I still considered to be the best starter SLR ever made - the venerable Pentax K-1000, affordable for a schmoe but good enough to be used in professional settings.

Years later, I picked up a digital camera and from the the word go I was lost. I was a pretty good film photographer, but I was lucky in that regard because i had the luxury of just using higher speed film and just opening her up and off to the races I went. Today, photography is a two-headed serpent - better because of the obvious reasons (no need for film processing, the advent of Photoshop, etc) and worse because settings on some cameras can be overly complicated or have to be re-learned from camera brand to camera brand. But I digress.

I post my photos here but I don't like them at all. Even at macro settings on the cameras I use, I don't think I get the crispness I'm used to. I've tried a few cameras, but I've gotten the best results with a Pentax X-5 "bridge camera" (more advanced than a point-and-shoot but not quite an SLR), and, amazingly, a pocket sized Kodak digital camera as well. I think Kodak's camera line was pretty good, but I don't think the brand even issues them any longer; well-made cameras that are the most user-friendly I've tried.

I used to be good, but these days, I think I'm utterly half-assed. I need to learn more, even now. The real problem is that these days I'd rather save for good watches than buy camera equipment.

With iPhone at least I find that macros shots are shit without a tack-on lens. So I take the shot further away for the clarity, then crop for that macro feel.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH2. Cheap, but it comes with a Leica lens. I used to shot on film with an Olympus OM-1. Most of my pics looked like shit, but digital can even make a schmuck like me shoot a decent pic, once in awhile.

Iphone 6 now. The harder I tried with my expensive cameras, the worse the shot.
I understand I just need a nice sunny day, but my pictures still suck. At least you can tell the brand.

Back in the day, Nikon N8008. Then went to Minolta manual, can't remember the model. Then to Canon digital. Can't remember what the latest Canon DSLR I bought my wife was; but, we rarely use it despite a healthy investment in a Canon L and some nice portrait and wide angle lenses. Have macro lenses, tubes, extenders and other goodies.

Now, just my iPhone 6+. Eager to see the camera upgrades on the 7+ when we switch to AT&T in January.

Depending, I use an older Olympus C4000, or a newer Olympus SZ-12, or a Canon S110...or my Samsung S4 phone.

Thanks guys. Its just a Panasonic LX-5. Like John's it has a Leica lens. The glass matters. It was a good point-and-shoot camera 6 years ago ;-) I haven't updated for a while because it fits into my underwater housing....and it takes good pictures. I am thinking of the Panasonic LX100 with a new housing. Maybe next year.

Olympus Camedia Digital C-4000.

I'll preface with I'm not a Camera guy. Just take a picture or two now and then.
Comprehensive review.

Simple to use after the learning curve. This camera has advanced features that are laid out on the screen menu in a user friendly fashion. I use it on a tripod that collapses to 10 inches. Great feature for desktop shots. Just do a wee bit of zoom for a stabilized closeup. Used this for 7 years without issue.
