How do you guys feel

Postby tiktok » February 28th 2018, 3:20pm

About older watches having inscriptions on the back. I'm looking at a piece from the 40s that has a fairly innocuous inscription about Montana but it makes me think about ghosts in the watch.

I have a couple with inscriptions. It doesn't bother me, but some won't buy them because I guess it takes away from the value.

If the watch was right otherwise, would be fine by me.

As long as it doesn't say "To Abe,Enjoy the show" you're OK.

Got one, and I'm perfectly OK with it. Besides, I can't see anything wrong about a watch that tells more of a story than one without an inscription.

It is a piece of history, embrace it, someone in the past did and you are now carrying that legacy forward.

Unless it said something offensive, I think it adds an interesting element to the watch.

I worry about ghosts too. ... I will not sit on an antique chair, sleep in an antique bed, or eat off antique silverware/dishes.

My Rolex 6205 is inscribed with "Wesley." Since the watch is 63 years old now and most men in 1954 would have to have been established to purchase a $100 watch.... he has to be dead.

I sold the bracelet and changed to a strap and cleaned the case like a crazy man.

I'm comfortable with it now.

I have several watches that are engraved with various and sundry things, and I think they're truly wonderful things to have in any collection. You have to remember, chaver, that we own nothing in this life; everything we have is on temporary loan, and hopefully, these much-loved things will once again end up in the hands of people who will cherish and even love them as much as we once did. Indeed, I like to think that if there are ghosts in these little machines, they will be nothing more than the good feelings (I hate the word "vibes") the previous owners have about their old watch becoming someone else's treasure, just as it was once treasure to them...

I hope that made sense. Now go look in the mirror...why? Your shtreimel is on crooked.

Cool info! My dad had to pick this up at his estate sale in 1989 shortly after he passed.

I've stalked all the watches I have paperwork on.

Notables: a minister, head butcher, an achieved drag racer, an Alaskan nature photographer, an independent watch maker. ....

Notable because they are all still alive!

I just realized that I have three that I have not researched..... they are very modern pieces.... but now I am worried. If you see a fire sale.. . You will know.

I'm ok with watches that were relatives. I have several of grandpa's. Hmmm. ... I realize now that in would not eat with them on and will thoroughly wash my hands before eating.

I plan to haunt my favorite watches in a few years. I hate having so many favorites.... if I go tonight I'll stay with my Everose Daytona.

I'm with Smells and speak from the Valley of the Dead. Given every opportunity to flatline forever, I chose life. When I was in the burn ward and still higher than Rick James, they brought me out in the hallway and I took three steps and the entire burn unit was my witness and everyone cheered or so I am told. Honestly, I thought I was swimming.

Someone posted this at the NAWCC about five years ago, and I did some research on it for him that seems to validate it.

Being a member of mybulova I knew about the President line of watches, and the presentation by Coolidge to Harris, so dug out some info and pics.
This links to a newspaper article about the presentation, giving a date.

https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=f ... 9495&hl=en

This link shows that the President and his wife were good friends with Bucky Harris, as they attended his wedding.

Photo of the actual presentation.

The case serial number inside dates to 1924.
Edit: forgot to say, Harris was with the Washington Senators, and the presentation watch is a Bulova Senator.

Doesnt bother me on a watch but years ago at a coin show I turned down a pair of very old matching 18K gold wedding rings with engraving on the insides. Came in a nice presentation case and with a brief history. Creeped me out for some reason. Changed my mind and went back to get them but they were gone. Only $110 at the time and today the weight of the gold far exceeds that.

I don't like it. I have only one watch that is engraved, a rather small Nivada calendar watch. Obviously a gift from the parents to their son. As a pure collector item I think it is interesting but it also makes me a bit sentimental. It reminds us that the person has either died or probably had to part with something, that he really would have liked to keep. Stuff from the family is a different story, but I prefer not get drawn into personal affairs of others. Maybe that is also in part explaining why I feel uneasy about this.

Doesn't bother me. Unless I was buying something new from Urine. This happened once when I got a Bolt Zeus invicter, and it was engraved "Two bubba conglats pasing The GeD."
