Hamilton relaunches the Khaki Navy Frogman

Hamilton relaunches the Khaki Navy Frogman

Postby koimaster » February 21st 2016, 11:46am

The company’s focus has been turned towards its aviation line in recent years so the relaunch of the Frogman is a timely one. In fact, the last dive watch to come from Hamilton was the Khaki Sub Auto in 2013 – not so long ago, then, but not something which stuck fast in the memory.

The Frogman takes its name and design elements from a watch produced by Hamilton as a tool for the US Navy’s divers in the early 20th century. This being Hamilton, its dive watches have a Hollywood connection too: the Frogman made its debut in the 1951 film The Frogmen. Apparently this was the first Hamilton to feature in a Hollywood film; something that – particularly in recent years – has become the main marketing drive of the brand, supplying watches to the Men in Black series, The Martian and Interstellar.

I liked the older version much more.
The 42 mm ones are decent but the 46 is too friggin big. The date window looks out of place with such a big case.

My main reason for selling mine was that under that canteen cover was the tiniest, hard to grasp, crown in the world.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 42mm out sells the 46mm. Not just because of cost, but 46mm is just too big. Sure they will give up a helium valve, limited edition, and a huge depth rating, but the 42mm is just more wrist friendly and likely to actually be worn.

I don't get crown locks/caps. To me they appear as nothing more than extra pieces to break or gouge the back of the hand.

Not necessary for WR. Aesthetically, a pimple on the ass of horology.

They were originally the result of watches being made to military specs for W/R. Hamilton and Elgin made some in the forties. Enjoyed by collectors today for the vintage military look. Hardly an aesthetic horological pimple. They serve a purpose the same as a screw down crown does.

I'm going to leave my jury out on this one until I see one in the wild. I'm on the fence.

That S.A.R. Rescue Timer they reference in the article in the same price range is pretty sharp.

All kidding aside, do I really need to be reminded, day-in and day-out, that that thingy attached to the crown is a LOCK? I really don't think I do, but it's still a nice looking watch, and I hope Hamilton does well with it.

Crown lock is pretty tastefully done for that sort of thing. Nice looking watch.
