Pita, short for pain in the ass, was a stray that found itself in my yard a few years ago. Strange but friendly cat which after a year living in a cat box with a heated pad found its way into the house. We noticed this past summer that he was getting a bit thinner and were told he had worms. Yesterday after taking him to a different vet, we discovered he had cancer of the tongue and kidney and was in renal failure. After spending an hour with him at the Vets' he was put to sleep at about 12 years of age. I really hate putting a animal to sleep no matter how much you know it will ease their pain and suffering.

Sorry for the loss. My grandparents lost their bird unexpectally and a
week later the dog died of old age and health reasons then a month
and a half later my grandfather dies of Anaplastic Cancer. My grandmother
said it was Gods way of telling her it was meant to be the way it was because
she wouldnt be able to take care of a sick dog or bird.
I've never felt like I truly belonged here and I believe it's time I move on.

My cat is 16 and I know the time is close for me to have to be brave.
It sucks losing an animal, but at least we do the best we can for them.

We had to put down our little bichon named Dolly -- one of the sweetest doggies I've ever had in my life -- four years ago, as she had pancreatic cancer and was in pain. Not long afterward, we got our current little turd, Daffodil, a bichon / poodle mix whom we both adore. Even with four years having come and gone, I still weep over our little Dolly. Does it ever get better? No. But it does get easier. In the meantime, just take it one day at a time. It will get easier, I promise.

In the last few years we have lost three cats to cancer.

Kitty age 14
Shadow age 18
PITA age unknown but over 10

And a couple of dogs

Woodrow age 15
Trapper age 15

Life can suck that they do not live as long as humans.

Sorry for your loss Alain. My best friend Buster, big dog, is on his last days. 14 years he's been with me. He still has good days...but they are fewer and further apart.

Sorry for your loss. All three of my cats are 12 or older; I only hope they fall on the upper end of the bell curve.

Been there, done that too many times as well. We're petless for the last several years and don't know if we'll do it again.

Sorry for your loss Alain. Hard to say good bye to a beloved family member.

Sorry to hear this, Alain. A few years ago we had to put down two cats within a year, both of them nearly 20 years old. I'm not embarrassed to say the process in both cases completely unmanned me, and caused us plenty of pain.

It's an old trope, but it's important, as loving pet owners, to do what is best for the pet. Giving a pet love, food and shelter is only the good part.
