No one knows this, but Ed and I talked on the phone from time to time. Only person I have connected with in a forum on that level. I am sitting here with watery eyes thinking about him right now. I had hoped to have been able to meet him. I have a sister I visit, who lives out that way. I need to remember that life is shorter than we realize. I can't put off things ,or life will happen without me.

I appreciate the chance to read this also, as I too missed it. I didn't have much chance to get to know him, but he seemed like a stand up guy and I know his presence around these parts is sorely missed.

I would like to remind members that the 14th of this month is the anniversary of Ed's death. Very tough for his wife as it is also Valentines Day.

A donation of $100 was made today to the Arbor Foundation in honor of bigedsurf. Every year a donation will be made automatically for each member who has passed away.

First: Happy Valentine's Day, Ed.

Second: This place continues to amaze me and remind me that virtually no place else is even worth logging on to. Just amazed and humbled by the generosity, class, and heart showed by this collection of people.

Yup.

Growing up in Chicago, we had a term--"he's a good guy" or, more regrettably, "he was a good guy." A lot of people don't understand these terms, or are puzzled by them; in this era of hollow superlatives, they sound like faint praise. While "guy" generally denotes men, it could also be used for a woman, particularly a woman who's seen as a sister figure, "one of the guys." In reality, Chicagoans don't use these terms loosely. To be a good guy means the top, the best. If you save a kid from a burning building, take care of your family, look out for your neighbors, don't cheat, stand heroically for what's right, are kind, generous, considerate, happily take a punch in the mouth because your pal's being as asshole in the wrong bar and you're backing him up, pay your taxes, work hard, don't bitch too much, then you're a good guy.

With this in mind, RIP Ed and HF. Both of you were good guys. Of course, there're a lot of good guys on this forum.

In Ed's memory another 125 trees were donated to the Chippewa National Forest via the Arbor Day foundation for planting. Ed's wife will receive a card from them letting her know that he is remembered by us.
