The 50 Best Whiskeys in the World

Postby koimaster » October 16th 2016, 6:55pm

Over the past decade or so, the number of varieties has exploded, presenting tipplers with a mind-boggling array of options. You can now drink bourbon that’s aged entirely on the ocean, a truly kick-ass rye, or Japanese single malts that beat the Scots in blind taste tests. All this poses a serious — if highly welcome — dilemma: What the hell should I drink? Fear not: Men’s Journal is on the case. In addition to putting our own taste buds to work, we recruited 18 top experts (listed here) from the wide world of whiskey — writers, bartenders, restaurateurs (and in some cases, all three) — who have collectively sampled over 1,000 bottles. Somehow, we narrowed them down to these 50, most of which can be found at any good liquor store and none of which should fail to please. So whether you’re looking for massive peat smoke for a frigid winter night, an easy weekend sipper on the rocks, or a budget bourbon for a pitcher of Old Fashioneds, we’ve got the perfect bottle for you.

Yeah, a pitcher of Old Fashioneds. I do this a lot. I whip up a big fucking pitcher of Old Fashioneds for me and my neighbors, then we drink 'em out on the front porch and smoke some blunts.

I've become addicted to Manhattans lately.
Glad to see 2 of my favorites on the list
    * Balvenie DoubleWood 12
    * Bullet Rye

If on a budget however, Dewar's White Label in bulk works just fine.

I prefer the big bottles with handles. It's easier to pour 'em when you're jaked.

I'd give almost anything to find my two favorites in big handled bottles.

The bigger bottles have an additional advantage--if you don't finish 'em in one night, you think you can avoid checking in to Schick Shadel.

Can't find a bottle of Knob Creek 2001 Limited Edition?...try a bottle of KC Single Barrel and save a few bucks for other things...

Can vouch for the Monkey Shoulder, WL Weller 12, Redbreast, Beam Black.

This "editors' list" appears to largely be a rehash of things covered in Lew Bryson's excellent book, "Tasting Whiskey." A book which, for anyone familiar with or new to whiskeys, should read.

Mmm...a list of world's best whiskeys that's mostly American bourbons and ryes?

Carl, you Commie! ;)

Did you even read the list? A large number of Scotches are on that list including at least three Japanese Scotches.

Like looking at the menu at Dairy Queen. I will need to try the Yamaha and Hibachi. Do I need to take my shoes off when I drink a swiggle?
While looking for local distributors I found this.

I can read. My point is there are brilliant whiskeys from all around the world that didn't get a look in. For the heftiest part of the list to come from the one country that the author happens to live in says it all.

There are all manner of great malts that should be on that list ahead of just about anything blended or bourbon. And Rye? :5wrew:

I will agree on Rye for sure. Like drinking liquid iron. Blech!

Other than Scotch I have not been privy to any whiskeys beyond what Canada, the US and Ireland have to offer.

Do you have some favorites from other countries? Don't ever see much said about whiskeys from other countries.

I'm not vouching for one over another, but lots of countries do a good malt: http://www.worldwhiskiesawards.com/2016 ... lt-whisky/
