The Renato tourbillon scam: a pictoral record.

Postby WatchDorks.Net » February 2nd 2012, 2:10pm

Since some people are not familiar with the timing of the Renato tourbillon scam or what exactly was said or promised by the MinkWeasel, or when, I thought I'd put together a pictoral record of all of the emails that were sent out by Mink, along with two emails that went between the two of us.

The emails are exactly as sent and received. The only redaction I have done is to remove my own personal information.

By way of disclosure, I was one of the suckers that originally ordered one, on April 15, 2011. However, I saw the handwriting on the wall fairly quickly, and canceled my order 3.5 weeks later, on May 9. Even after I had canceled my order, Mink kept me on the email list for the tourbillon updates, so I have what I believe to be a pretty complete record of emails that Mink sent out.

I find it absolutely incredible that almost a year later, some people have still not canceled their order(s).

I think this insidious scam and how it was perpetrated deserves to be archived for people to see, and to be wary of this company, hence my doing this.

Note that in both a broadcast email and personally to me, Mink claims that there are multiple customers who actually received these tourbillons, yet to date not a single one has ever surfaced. The one supposedly photographed on Jim Skelton's wrist was a nonfunctional prototype.

As far as anyone can tell, these have never existed, nor ever will.

The Renatos that my wife & I have are decent watches. It's been probably 2 years since we bought them.

Great compilation, WD. I had only heard bits and pieces about this issue, which makes the minkman's chutzpah seem even more amazing for having read the emails one after the other. I like my Renato's, but it's looking like one collezioni that's not gonna get added to...

Wow, I came around after all of this.....I can't imagine being one of the guys that got ripped off by this asshole. I think I would have really lost it. I am almost at that point now just reading about it.
I don't have any experience with this company and don't know if they are still in business but if they are there is no way in hell I would give them a second chance.... this is not about just screwing up and making mistakes this is a planned con. This guy should be buried in the middle of a cornfield....

Dorks, sorry about your troubles - but you at least have done a public service here. I mean...is anyone who has read this going to spend another penny on any Renato products ever again? I'd rather think not.

It wasn't any trouble for me; I got my money back comparatively early compared to most who hung on (or still are!!) assuming The MinkWeasel would make good. A little annoying, but I never doubted I would be made whole... if worse came to worse I would have done a credit card chargeback.

In many ways I think Mink is far more evil than Lalo. Yes, Lalo is a snake oil salesman and misleads about the origins/manufacture of his product (but then again isn't that a requirement to be a "TV brand"?), but as far as I recall, he has never tried to outright defraud his customers.

What Mink has done is an entirely different level of douchebaggery.

Not too sound like an asshole, but if your dumb enough to buy Chinese tourbillon you deserve to get ripped off.
