Got a new ride.

Postby Mark1 » February 1st 2017, 5:06pm

Okay, it's not new, but new to me. I'm happy to now be a fractional owner of a 1978 Piper Cherokee Warrior II. She flies real stable but I will need a few more hours to get used to the low wing configuration again. Got signed off on it yesterday and am looking forward to some good flying weather hopefully soon.

I agree with conj. I wasn't expecting something like that.

Thanks folks. Flying is a lot of fun and not even as cheap as watch collecting. No beer runs RX, 12 hours bottle to throttle. We do have a fridge in the hangar for the occasional post-flight "debrief".

I wouldn't have been nearly as impressed had your new ride been even the likes of an Audi R8.

Damn! A plane! So many of us dream of such a thing and you have accomplished it.

When I was a kid, my best friend's dad had a 172 and I got to go once in awhile.

It was incredible to fly around in that plane. First time, it was so damn loud in there is what stood out the most, I'd pictured it pretty much like a jet, but smaller. There's nothing else like it.

Red and white were just somehow meant for each other.

Fun travels.

Very nice Mark. How many hours do you have in the air with similar models. I ask because you mentioned being a bit rusty with this aircraft configuration.

'Tis a beauty Mark. May you have many hours of flying fun in that beautiful aircraft.

Not a lot. I had a couple dozen hours in a Piper Archer, but that was almost 15 years ago. It's been exclusively high wing Cessnas since then. The handling in landing and takeoffs is a bit different. To my mind, landing in the Cherokee is easier, takeoff is easy enough in the low wing you just use a little nose down trim compared to a Cessna. A lot of it has to do with sight picture, with the low wing it seems the standard glide slope is a little shallower. Also, your forward vision is the same but you've lost a little of the peripheral with a low wing.

Given what you say about the wing placement, I can see the difference in lift and landing. I also understand the blind spot on the Piper given the wing location but didn't you have a blind spot at your 9 and your 3 (high) with the Cessna? Do you have your instrument rating at this point. I know you have been flying for awhile now but not everyone goes out to earn one. I only know a little about civilian aircraft but I imagine this one uses about 10-12 gallons per hour?
