Thank you Alain for allowing our project to be posted here. Many thanks also to svaglic for the shill post and AlbertaTime for his kind, and very true, words.

Please do join us and pay the deposit if you are interested because the project will not make it to the prototype stage without your support.

Uhm, You mean I got one of Ed's watches in an auction, here? Verdammt, I must have completely lost track of things...

Yes! Lovely watch, and my Chinese colleagues (we have a huge IT office in Tianjin) got all excited. But I thought this was a regular Seagull. :oops:

I will be picking up a blue one since I like the bezel as opposed to the black one but the brown one is also tempting. Is it possible to post your photos here as the ones Allison posted are a bit small for my old eyes.

Are these watches going to say watchuseek on them?

Thank you Russ and Allison as well for letting us know about this. I am going to order 2 and then have them engraved watchlords on the caseback.

You still did very well, and no reason to be embarrassed, at all. The '63/304 world has its own confusions :-)

Here's my understanding of what's what in the '63/304 world, these days...(Ed can correct me, please :D)

When it comes to '63/304 re-issues, at the outset (mid 2000's), HK Sea-Gull (not Tianjin) made more-or-less your style of '63/304 model (but with a star, not the 304 squadron logo). And there were a couple of other earlier HK sorta-304-with-star models as well. Those were made under the guidance of a fellow named "Thomas" to us westerners, while Thomas was an HK Sea-Gull employee (Mind you, HK is a subsidiary of Tianjin, AFAIK).

Anyways, Tianjin Sea-Gull made--and, I think still makes--a chunkier 304 model (seen here, and in photo 2 below) with much broader hands, and that used the 304 squadron logo. There's a very good description of the Tianjin Sea-Gull 304 here.

So, it's fair to say two original variants of the original 304 watches became the modern templates, and the result is: Tianjin produces re-issue models closer to one, and all other re-issue models follow the other more closely.

Here's the two original designs...

Image

...and two post-2000 modern re-issues showing the two re-issue threads...

Thomas left HK Sea-Gull a few years ago, and since then (to my understanding) has become possibly the largest contractor for production of 63-variant models in the world. I could be wrong, but when I see a non-Tianjin '63 variant (no matter where it comes from) I presume that Thomas and his associates had a part in the delivery at least some, if not most, of it.

Ed's 304 was launched as a WUS forum watch, with details here. The inspiration came from seeing originals, primarily Li Wei's original 63/304. Li Wei speaks about his, here.

Li Wei (my friend, and group leader of the Domestic Watch department of the China Horologe Association, the governing body for watch and clock/timepiece production in China) was very cooperative with Ed to ensure that the most traditional of Ed's 304 versions (off-white and black dial/non-panda, like yours, gerdson) mirrored his original as precisely as possible, of course absent the "I'm a CHA executive/horological expert" and "would make it prohibitively more expensive", polishing that Li Wei mentions in his own article.

Since Ed's first '63/304, he has also developed a number of other variants with panda and coloured dials (the green panda is breathtaking).

I could never commit to a watch with that much lead time. I'm too fickle I guess. Too much chance that by fall I'm committed to a watch I don't really want anymore.

Ditto. It'd be like hiring Aunt Peg for a blowjob sometime in September, and by the time she's pulling her dentures out, she's no longer hot.

Not about the wait. It's more about the "want" still being there.

Thanks again for the warm welcome guys.

I haven't figured out how to reply to your individual posts so will do so in one post.

@gertson - unleash your inner devil 😈

@biglove - thank you.

@koimaster / Alain - the case back will be etched with F71. If you are interested, I'll ask if it is possible to order sterile case backs for you.

@conjurer - Aunt Peg will always be hot, even come September!

To say nothing about "still alive". It's mortality that makes me unconcerned about tritium life and concerned about buying Randall or Milt Sparks. Besides if I croaked and somebody tossed a watch on my cold dead body my Buddhist wife would insure that I reincarnated as a flea on a dog's anus for the next 40,000 years.

Ordered the blue as well. Since it does say wus anywhere on it I will be having watchlords engraved on the caseback. I look at this as a project watch as opposed to a forum watch like cw or wf has.
