Fall Charity Auction??

Fall Charity Auction??

Postby conjurer » September 4th 2017, 9:00am

So, it's Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer, and it feels like fall is right around the corner (well, not really--it's going to be over 90 degrees around here for the next few days.)

Anyway, as it's a pain in the ass to run a Christmas auction, how about a charity auction ahead of Christmas? Just floating the idea out there. I'm open to ideas and great thoughts from the various Lords.

Carry on!

It seems like a lot of members are agreeable to the auction. For newer members, or members who've been living under a rock, here's how it works:

Members donate watches (or wartchs) for auction; they send 'em to me, I shoot some miserable pics, and put 'em up for auction for some agreed-upon charity. I send the winners the watches, and forward the funds to the charity. We've had numerous charity auctions in the past, raising thousands of dollars for several different charities, including veterans groups, children's hospitals, WL members in time of need, etc. It's easy and fun!!

Anyway, let's hear from as many members as possible, with some great ideas for worthy charities.

Thanks!

I am assuredly in agreement with any hurricane-related charity that our members have a consensus on.

I get the feeling this is gonna be a really good auction.

Paypal also has their own Harvey Fund (no fees) that is up to 3.5m

If any member would be so kind as to inspect the relative merits of Harvey Charities and report back here (or in a separate thread) I would appreciate it.

Quite so. I have already received three PMs from members who are committing donations--of course, when the going gets tough for some folks, the Lords step the fuck up--and I welcome any PMs. What I'm thinking about is the same 75%/25% split, as we did for the Spring St. Judes auction, where the greater part goes to the charity and the lesser part goes to upkeep expenses of the forum.

However, no auctions will begin until we can come to an agreement as to the charity. If need be, I'll start a separate thread with a Dreaded Poll to decide. Please post any and all ideas for a charity in this thread--the only thing I require is that they accept Paypal.

I like St. Jude. Don't have an issue with something related to Hurricane Harvey, as long as it checks out. Unfortunately, tragedies like this spawn some unscrupulous charities.
